If you've just purchased a new home, you and your family may be having some fun as you work on its interior design. You may have a lot of existing furniture from your previous property and would like to incorporate all of your fixtures and fittings, but you need to guard against the tendency to cram everything in, no matter what. You also need to avoid making some crucial design mistakes that could spoil the entire project and in particular, you need to work with the natural light flooding into the home through your windows. To end up with a finished result that everyone can be proud of, what are some of the biggest and most glaring errors to avoid?

Let There Be Light

When it comes to room lighting, traditional home design calls for a single source right in the middle of the ceiling, but you don't have to go down this road. Certainly, you can add a high-powered bulb which could make the room particularly bright at night, but it's likely to cast unwanted shadows and make the room feel as if it is washed out. You should use multiple light sources instead and take full advantage of the natural sunlight flooding in through your windows by using high-quality shutters that can be angled for dynamic effect. Think about using strategically-placed mirrors, as well, to really bring the room alive.

Steer Away from Convention

Much will depend on how you configure all your furniture, however, in order to make the most of the space available. Don't think that you have to place a large sofa or dresser up against the wall because this is the conventional way. Instead, you should study how the natural light works in that room and position your furniture items strategically to compensate. Remember, this is your house, your style and your creation, so look at the problem through many different angles before you decide to act.

Avoid the Mismatch

When you choose shutters, you may be tempted to go for a different look in each room because the inward-facing component matches your chosen style for that space more effectively. This is all well and good, but have you considered how it all looks from the outside? If you're not careful, you may end up with a variety of different styles facing the street and this will just look messy and mismatched to any passers-by. You can certainly choose window shutters that have a neutral outer shade and a different type of treatment on the inner, so you can satisfy your design demands that way.

Have a Discussion

Once you have arrived at your ideal plan, talk everything through with your shutter suppliers to see what they can provide and how it can all fit in nicely.
